Starting a Business: "Of Coffee and Pastries"

Not long ago, I had a dream of opening a bakery/coffee shop.

It was a fabulous idea, as it effectively combines my love for baking with my love for having a good chat over a slice of lemon loaf and cup of coffee.

What more raison d’etre did I need? (See, I sound like a baker already. And a good one.)

But my dream effectively was squelched when I honestly assessed my life patterns in direct correlation to my new business idea. Simply put, I am a homebody. And a night owl. I realized I’d begin filling pastries and baking muffins about three hours later than I usually go to bed. And spending more waking hours away from, than at, home.

I’d be grumpy.

And nobody likes a grumpy baker. Shoots the whole jolly-pink-cheeked-flour-dusted-nose image thing.

On top of that, there was the whole two-step with a business plan and financing. Yawn. (Sorry – did I just do that?) Honestly, all that just sucked the fun right out of it for me.

And so, I remain happily employed. No start-ups on the horizon. But I’m thinking that, should a new idea come to mind, it’s got to be something I can do from home between 10PM and 2 in the morning. And love enough to withstand all the red tape.

Hey, I know my parameters. I’d say that’s 101 in starting a business.

For now, I’ll stick with writing. And baking during writer’s blocks.

I laughed out loud at "jolly-pink-cheeked-flour-dusted-nose." :-) You bring up a good point about taking a rosy, dream-sequence view of running a business! That tends to leave out a LOT. It would be funny if everyone could complete this sentence: "If it weren't for the ________(insert obvious necessity) I'd love to ____________" As in: If it weren't for the smoke, flames, and ladders, I'd love to be a firefighter!

Hi guys! As a FT mom and a PT worker in the Communications arena, I find it hard to think about what I'm really passionate about and persue it! My career is secondary to my husbands financially and time-wise, so I feel more of an obligation to think what works best for the kids, my husband, the house, etc... I feel REALLY lucky to work PT at a flexible job that pays pretty good money, but is this my life's passion? Not really. Luckily I work with AMAZING women who make it much more worthwile and I am able to be there for my family (for the most part!), so I guess I am where I should be for now... Still wish my work was more fulfilling, my house neater and i had a personal chef...

A pasion is something that must be followed, maybe you won't have your own bakery but as a friend of mine recently did she not fits a small company providing pastries for large businesses with being a full time Mum, she gets the best of both worlds -- where there is a will there is a way! I have spent the last 2 years working when the kids nap, when they are in bed. Never going out and swapping childcare with my husband as soon as he comes home from work. For us it is worth it as we both believe in what i am doing - www.sevendecasa.eu. I cannot see the business not working - or maybe that is just the eternal optimist in me!! either way i will stick at it and it will become our primary income and lead to the life we want, where we are all together more often. Ha Ha, I love that Viviana. How about if it weren't for the water I'd love to be a life guard. Again, Ha Ha! You couldn't be more right. Linda, try writing down things you enjoy doing and then sum it all up. Go back to even when you were a young girl. There has to be something your passionate about. You just haven't tapped into the truth of it yet. Renata, you're so funny, but real. That doesn't mean that God will leave you out of a great and fun desire. He knows when the time is right, just don't forget about it when he makes room for your dreams and goals. In our temple we have many mansions, not just one or two. Everyone keep that in mind. I just want to say all of you women inspire me to want my dream even mire badly than before all the blogging. Thanks

If it weren't for all of the animals, I'd love to be a zoo keeper! :-)
