What the Economy is Teaching Me

I’m emailing back and forth right now with one of our wonderful fwm Community members. I can‘t WAIT until fwm launches this summer and we have a forum so that we can do more of this kind of talking. In doing so we are, of course, learning more about one another. She’s getting a business off of the ground, which is what brought her here. I’m so impressed with her indomitable spirit. She described some cataclysmic hard times she has faced, things some of us would think we would not ever be able to get out from under. And yet here she is.

One thing that she is facing right now is that the economic downturn is affecting her ability to grow this business. That is the case with many business owners right now. Other than a few people I know who are blessed with unusual material wealth, we are all facing adjustments and a bit of belt-tightening. The Today Show’s Dr. Dale Atkins, an fwm Expert Contributor, recently wrote a wonderful article about this, and in her usual chock-full-of-wisdom style, she breaks it down into some manageable concepts. The last sentence of this article says it all (no…I won‘t tell you what it is! I want you to click on the link and read it!).

In addition to the personal lifestyle changes many of us have had to make, the organizations for whom we work are doing what they can to minimize the impact and, in some cases, stay afloat. This can mean some unpleasant things for career women, such as doing the work of two people to cover the workload following a layoff, or worse, being the laid off employee.

How do we get out from under that? We do what successful businesses do. Constantly evolve.

Take back control as best as you can, and you will keep the situation from robbing you of your peace of mind. Make those changes, tighten that belt, survive that layoff, bearing in mind that others have done it and you have probably faced worse than this and survived. And never think that you won’t get out from under it. Whether you are in good times or bad you may rely on the fact that fortunes change.

What advice do you have for others as we make it all work in the current economy? What resources have helped you?

It is true that we are all faced with hard times. I think it is important to remember that you control your own destiny. If you are strong and know what you want then you will achieve it. What has helped me in building my business Se Vende Casa www.sevendecasa.eu is complete total and utter faith that what i am doing will fill a gap in the market and help thousands of people find spanish properties. So far this is what is happening, it will only grow from here... Good luck to you all Emma

Our family has made so many changes due to ecominic ups and downs that I now know that the only constant is change! Things that used to scare me now don't put me off at all, as I learn to "constantly evolve." If there is one thing that we have learned, it is to spend the good, prosperous times getting into the best financial shape that we can. I always try to remember that it won't stay that way forever. Actually, I try to remember that exact same thing when times are lean.

Hello,it has been awhile since I posted a comment, this is the subject I am most concerned about.I am divorced caring for a child with a mental illness, working multiple jobs and falling further behind everyday,I was in a three car pile up with me being the recipient, suffering from nerve damage which sometimes limits my ability to create.I have had to file for bankruptcy and my house is in foreclosure. Silver lining anyone? Having a hard time finding one. This has been my life for the past three years, the pressure we all face now, has worn me down, I am tired. I need real answers to keep my business and hopes alive. I mentioned to Viviana, that I don't give up it is not my nature to do so. In all honesty it is becoming more difficult every day.

Dorinne, maybe there isn't a "silver lining" to look for right now. Maybe right now what's most important is getting through each day, one minute at a time, one challenge at a time. Yesterday I was watching a new show on TV called "Wipe Out", a physically grueling reality show where the contestants are put through ridiculous physical obstacles. They all start out looking shiny and new, and by the end of the qualifying round, they all look like they returned from purgatory, yet they couldn't care less, they were so tired. These contestants simply want to survive the obstacle course and move to the next round. You are going through what feels like a financial, emotional, physical, and even spiritual obstacle course. I don't know if things will get better in the time frame you want (i.e. yesterday), but things run in cycles and phases, and this too, will pass. Your task at hand may be to persevere through the toughest of times and move through to the next round of this "Wipe Out".

Thank you Jane. I watched that show the other night, and your right it is extremely rigorous, not unlike what everyone is facing at the moment. Sorry for the negativity, I am just worn out and tired. I did something different today, I took a different way home. Instead of taking the interstate, I drove along lake Michigan, absolutely stunning! To see such natural beauty was refreshing. The are several points along the way that have you right along the lake at a decent height. Breathtaking! I have been helping my son to take over the food portion of the business so I can get back to making jewelry, it is helping to take some of the pressure off and I can focus again. I appreciate your comments, I know what I need to do to get my life under control, it requires restoring my faith and dependence on God. He supplies the endurance if we throw our burdens on him.

Dorinne, Honestly, miracles happen every day (though it can be very hard to see). At 22, I lost a baby at five mos. and was told I could never have children, but had two great kids (now adults). I've been in FOUR car accidents, had five hand surgeries, and was told by my surgeon I would never work again, so I also have nerve damage and chronic pain to boot but I returned to some very high-stress, high level jobs earning good $$. Never mind professional counseling--find a friend and have a glass of wine if you can--it's cheaper and more fun! Take care and let us know how you're doing.

Hello, Shirley, and welcome! THANK YOU for your post--it's so comforting to remember that everyone goes through hard times. Even when we feel alone, we are together with others in that feeling.

Thank you Shirley. Sorry to hear of your loss. This is the first time in my life, that I actually feel tired and worn out. I guess what the economy has been teaching me is that I have reached my limit. I have grown weary of peoples stupid complaints and news of another bailout to people that do not deserve it. That other people in the pursuit for obscene wealth can destroy the lives of those trying to survive and keep their families and dignity intact. I am truly angry for the first time in my life. How do you fight another day when you the bullies are coming at you from all angles? When they would rather beat you up and take what is yours and have no mercy? I am struggling to hold onto the thin thread of hope I have left. How are others holding on, surviving, thriving? I seriously need to know!

Dorinne, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. I had a very difficult time earlier this year and I found 2 books that really helped me through it. Steering by Starlight: Finding Your Right Life No Matter What by Martha Beck is wonderful. She talks about going through the "Ring of Fire" when things get unbearably bad. You can get a sample of the book at www.marthabeck.com. Another great book is Loving What Is by Byron Katie. It is very philosophical and I found it helped me to turn my thinking around and positively deal with anger I had over a personal situation. You can get more information about the book and her approach at www.thework.com. I also like Shirley's suggestion - get a friend and a glass of wine. It really helps to have someone to talk to. You may want to let them know that you don't expect them to fix your problem - you just want someone to listen to you. Good luck to you - let us know how you're doing.

Thank you ladies for your words of encouragement and concern. I have good news, the mortgage co. called and is willing to modify my loan. I was finally able to discuss my situation with someone that would listen and treated me with dignity. I am frustrated with myself more than anything because I know why things are as they are. I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and I have lost sight of the future because I am distracted by the present. I need to get back to what I know is the truth and the only solution to my problems. My relationship with Jehovah God is on the mend and I am feeling better everyday. My sense of doom is diminishing and my creativity and hope are flourishing. Thank you again, I appreciate your concern, I apologize for the negativity.I hope everyone finds their happiness!

This is considered to be a hard time on business, but I see it as an amazing opportunity. What better way to see what you and your team are made of with limited budgets available. Are you cutting back on expenses? Are you using online networking instead of costly campaigns. Are you ASKING for referals instead of advertising? We should all be doing this anyway. We often go back to our emotions behind our money and move away from our dreams and desires. If we truly set our priorities from our heart and soul, the decisions we make are much easier. I am with a wealth managment firm that has grown 300% in the past 3 years during this "recession". It really is all in how we see it and the opportunities that we choose to embrace.
